West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday visited the home of the post-graduate trainee doctor who was brutally raped and murdered inside a seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The visit took place at around 12:45 pm, where the Chief Minister met with the grieving parents and relatives of the deceased.
During the visit, Mamata Banerjee expressed her deep condolences to the family and assured them of swift action in the case. She stated that the Kolkata Police are working diligently to solve the case, but warned that if significant progress is not made by Sunday, the investigation would be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
"It is an extremely painful incident. Whoever is involved in the case should be punished immediately. We want this case to be fast-tracked because then the judicial process will be quick," said the Chief Minister.
Mamata Banerjee also expressed her shock at the circumstances of the crime, noting that despite the presence of nurses and security at the hospital, the heinous act was still committed. "I am shocked that there were nurses in the hospital, there was security in the hospital, and yet this incident took place," she remarked.
In response to the incident, the Chief Minister announced that several key officials, including the hospital's principal, Medical Superintendent and Vice Principal (MSVP), Head of Department (HOD), and the Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), have been removed from their positions. She also confirmed that the dog squad, video department, and forensic department have been deployed as part of the ongoing investigation.
"The victim's parents have also said that someone from inside is involved. If Kolkata Police is unable to solve the case by Sunday, we will transfer it to CBI," Mamata Banerjee concluded.
